Amusement Park Injuries

Theme Park Accident Claims

Families all across the country visit amusement parks and water parks every year in search of fun experiences, trusting that the rides and other attractions are safe. Unfortunately, fun does not always mean safe.

According to the International Association of Amusement Parks’ Ride Incident Survey Report, in 2015 alone over 335 million people went on 1.6 billion rides at over 400 amusement parks across the United States.

Some of the most popular amusement parks in New Jersey include the following:

  • Six Flags Great Adventure (Jackson, NJ)
  • Funtown Pier (Seaside Park, NJ)
  • Clementon Amusement Park (Clementon, NJ)
  • Morey’s Pier (Wildwood, NJ)
  • Fantasy Island (Beach Haven, NJ)
  • Steel Pier (Atlantic City, NJ)
  • Ocean City Boardwalk (Ocean City, NJ)
  • Storybook Land (Egg Harbor Township, NJ)

No one expects these days of fun to turn into a serious incident; yet, every year people suffer devastating injuries, and in the worst cases wrongful death, caused by negligence at amusement parks and water parks.

According to raw data analyzed by CNN, about 45,000 people suffer injuries at amusement parks and water parks nationwide in a given year; and although water-based rides account for only 11% of amusement park rides in New Jersey, injuries from water-based rides, such a water slides and water pools, account for 40% of the total incidents.

This issue becomes even more of a concern when it comes to the safety and care of our children. A study by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSA) found that the children suffered from the greatest frequency of amusement park injuries, with children ages 0-19 years old accounting for over 50% of total amusement ride injuries from 1993 through 2000.

Improper maintenance, lack of inspection and maintenance, and product defects are often the cause of injuries on amusement park rides. Amusement park injuries may also result from a lack of staff training and failure to properly monitor and supervise park visitors. Regardless of the cause, the results can be devastating.
