Two aides at a nursing home facility were charged with neglecting a 79-year-old, disabled resident.
A hidden camera in that patient’s room revealed their actions. The footage showed the two aides did not use two-person assist for incontinence care, and failed to use the mechanical lift for transferring the resident.
The aides falsified documents in order to hide what actually took place.
The resident, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, is completely dependent on the nursing staff. Fortunately, the hidden camera was able to confirm the neglect that the resident’s family suspected, and they are now filing a Notice of Claim against the employees.
Residents and their families should not have to resort to utilizing hidden camera techniques to ensure safety and proper care. Nevertheless, it is discoveries like these that allow neglect to be brought to light so that steps can be taken to stop the abuse.
Problems, such as understaffing, can lead to the lack of appropriate services being provided; causing unnecessary injuries. When there are not enough nurse’s aides to meet the needs of nursing home residents, accidents and injuries are bound to occur. It is important for nursing home facilities to understand proper staffing needs. Equally as important is for the aides to understand and provide the right care for the residents.
